Tim Burton and screenwriter Jonathan Gems began to develop the idea of Mars Attacks! in 1993. Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to the series of trading cards on behalf of Burton. When Gems finished its first draft of a script in 1994, Warner commissioned revisions to Gems, Burton, Martin Amis, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to try to reduce the budget of the film to 60 million dollars, which finally were 80, plus others 20 that the Warner spent in the advertising campaign. Finally the tape raised 101 million dollars.
As a curiosity the film became known for the characteristic sound of the Martians when speaking, which was achieved by reversing a recording of the croak of a duck.
